Come and celebrate Earth Day and see the future on April 22, 2009! After Larry Smarr's presentation at the last DiamondExchange, a number of our participants indicated their interest in taking a "DiamondExchange field trip" to visit Calit2, Dr. Smarr's facility at the University of California San Diego. Calit2 brings together some of the world's top researchers, drawing from multiple disciplines including information technology, telecommunications, nanotechnology and life sciences. Together, they have pioneered in improving the visualization of vast amounts of data. To see the art of the possible, we have scheduled a special tour on Wednesday, April 22nd.

On the tour we will see mind-blowing applications of global networked computing and data visualization. (Click on the highlights below for more information on each.)

  • The largest display (in terms of pixels) in the world where scientists can visually explore complex scientific data sets.

  • The worlds first 4K projection system which operates at four times the resolution of HDTV. This system gives viewers a nearly-real experience for videoconferencing and multi-media.

  • The StarCAVE, a five-sided virtual reality room where scientists can project models and animations in stereo on 360 degree screens surrounding the viewer.

  • The Green IT project which focuses on testing the energy efficiency of computing systems to help drive a more efficient IT infrastructure.

  • The CAMERA project which develops the cyberinfrastructure to support marine metagenomics.

  • New work by Diamond that helps executives better understand and visualize demand — and how effective they are at capturing it!
